With all there is to give thanks for this Thanksgiving, there’s one thing you don’t want to miss: the fact that you have to write your college application. Yes, you heard me right. Hear these magical words and know why:

“Sorry, I have to work on my college application.”

That little sentence can get you out of almost anything.  What, do you think your crazy family is going to stop you from securing your future? Of course not. You’re a bright, ambitious young person with places to go. You need time to work on your college essay -- this stuff isn’t going to write itself, people!

Here are some great times to pull out your get-out-of-awful-free card.

Of course your Aunt Stella got put in charge of dessert again. Of course she decided to bring only a bunch of cranberry sauce. The kind from a can. Of course. Did you know they use that stuff as a lubricant for heavy machinery? It’s true. Probably. Maybe there’s some Halloween candy still in your bedroom.

“Where are you going to college?”

Goooooooood question. That’s exactly what I’m going to go work on now!

Of course, we’re just joking around. You should cherish your time with your family, and always be helpful. And if you do use this excuse, make sure you actually work on your college application essay (here are 8 great application essay tips to help you!)  Get it done now and you won’t be banking on a Christmas miracle next month.
