Sarah brings to American Honors a fusion of experience in K-12 education and community and global engagement. Sarah double majored in History and English Literature at Whitworth University, graduating magna cum laude while exploring the concepts of language, gender, and medieval law codes as a student and History Department Teaching Assistant. She shared her passion for education reform through serving as a middle school AVID tutor and developing mentoring and tutoring programs for at-risk middle and elementary school students. Through these experiences, she discovered that intentional relationships were the key to fostering a love for learning. Her own studies led her to explore the cultures of Germany and Central America in 2012. While in Costa Rica she completed a museum internship in indigenous history, becoming immersed in Latin American history and social justice advocacy. She had the additional privileges of running the social media for her school’s Central American campus and volunteering at a community English class.
Through her Master in Teaching program at Whitworth, Sarah has been able to combine her academic pursuits with 21st century pedagogy. She designed a blended learning history curriculum and developed a master’s project on the trifold relationship between higher order thinking skills, visual literacy, and lesson design. She also led lessons in college admissions writing for her senior students. On a sunny afternoon you can find her communing with nature and comic books while spoiling her two toy poodles.
